Storing Flammable Items Properly – Read the Labels!

19698485_s-2Mowing the lawn, indoor and outdoor painting projects, staining the deck, spray-painting or refinishing furniture, cutting up firewood with a chainsaw; all of these are typical home chores and projects require tools and/or substances that are – or should be – stored in your garage. Many people aren’t aware that these projects need products that tend to easily ignite – or cause spontaneous combustion. Improperly stored items like gasoline, and all items that contain turpentine or linseed oil are big fire hazards. According to the National Fire Protection Association, the garage is the most common area where fires start; in fact 20% of all home fires are started in the garage! The simplest tip for safety? Read the labels on everything! If a substance is easily combustible, there are distinct and clear instructions for exactly how to store it safely; read them – and follow the instructions!
