Garage doors winter
When winter comes, there is a dip in temperature which will cause some mechanical failures on your garage door. Although there is nothing you can do about the cold weather, there are some things that you can do in order to ensure that your garage door works perfectly well despite the freezing temperature and the hassles that it brings.
Lubricate the Tracks and Chains
Cold weather can actually cause your garage door to lubricant to dry up. Thus, it is always a good idea to constantly check your garage door’s lubrication and add to it from time to time to ensure that the doors slide well and easy on the railings. In addition, the lubricants will also help to protect the tracks and chains from moisture build up which can cause rusting. Aside from lubricating, you should also start cleaning the drive tracks and chains and remove any debris that may be caught in them.
Check the Battery
Battery operated garage doors and their batteries are also affected by the cold weather mostly due moisture build-up; thus, it is always best to make sure you have an extra set of batteries on hand just case in your present batteries die down. You don’t want to be pulling and tugging at your garage doors out in the cold, or having to run to the convenience store on a chilly winter morning for a set of batteries.
Check the Sealants
Garage door sealants play a crucial role. In the summer, these sealants help to keep the cold air from your air conditioners in, and during the winter they help to keep the warmth from your heating system in and prevent the cold air from coming in. If you have an old garage door, then there is a chance that the sealants may already have broken and cracked, and in this case, you will want to have them replaced before winter sets in.
Having a stuck garage door can be a very troublesome thing, especially during winter, and prepping your garage doors now can save you from a lot of headaches once winter sets in. As they say, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure – and that is so true even for the more common things like a garage door.
